Our History
Oakrun Farm Bakery
was founded in 1979 by the original owners,
John & Ellie Voortman. It started out as a 2,000
sq. ft. Bakery attached to the Voortman's horse
stables. It's purpose was to supply bakery products to the
local businesses in Ancaster. The bakery grew at such an
accelerated pace that the stables were soon shut down to
allow the bakery to expand.
The bakery, located in Ancaster, Ontario, has since
grown to a plant over 220,000 square feet in size. It has
capabilities to produce a diverse number of products for
both the fresh and frozen markets. The product list includes
English muffins, crumpets, pancakes, tarts, assorted danish
both baked or raw, muffins both baked or raw, bagel, cookies
(raw), tea biscuits (raw) & cakes. We specifically have
geared the plant to be a cost efficient, high volume
producer that will give the customer the consistent quality
he or she desires.
Oakrun currently operates a
fresh DSD distribution system ensuring that our
products reach all possible grocery chains
throughout Ontario. We currently have 37 independent
distributors delivering our fresh products in
Ontario.
Along with our DSD system
Oakrun also supplies the Food Service, Private
label and copack markets throughout Canada and the
U.S.A. In fact, these businesses which are
predominately frozen product make up a majority of our
total business. In order to properly handle these
products we now have over 30,000 square feet in
freezer space on site. We also have on-line freezing
capabilities on our bagel, danish, muffin, biscuit,
hotcake and cookie lines.
Our facility is well entrenched in
food safety programs ensuring that our products are
handled and delivered safely to our customers. We
abide by all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's)
and have developed a HACCP plan for our facility.
Our English Muffin and Crumpet lines are Kosher through WK (Winnipeg
Kosher). Our danish, pie, tart and bagel lines are
approved through COR (Toronto Kasruth
Council). Our plant is also organic certified
through the O C P P.
The most critical aspect of our
facility is our people. The philosophies developed
by our original owners have allowed
Oakrun to develop a loyal group of people
working in an environment that cares
about making Oakrun successful. We have
developed a team environment that allows everyone to
have a say in improving all areas within the
company. These teams have had a major influence in
drastically improving efficiencies, reducing
waste and allowing the business to become one of the
most successful Bakery's in Canada.
